Blackford Co., IN a hotspot of emigrants from Wankheim
[huge_it_maps id=”22″]
If you have a closer look to the data you will find out, that nearly all emigrants who have settled in Blackford. Co. were emanating from Wankheim. The only exception was Barbara Maier, who was born in Maehringen but married to Johannes Schwartzkopf from Wankheim. Interesting as well is that all of the emigrants left Germany after 1850. Some of them have first settled in Crawford Co., and then moved on to Indiana. A further stream resulted in the first generation of emigrants who originally settled in Crawford Co. The reason for this behaviour must have been that the land price in Indiana was much cheaper than in Ohio and also Blackford Co. was easier to reach than in the time before.
I was lucky that I could build out an intensive relationship to zu Blackford Co., because my close contact to the descendants of the brothers , Johann Friedrich and Johann Jacob Walker from Wankheim, who are distant relatives of mine. The descendants of these two emigrants have been in Germany as well I was guest in Blackford Co. several times.
Search for ancestors
The Historical Society and I are very interested to know where the emigrants finally settled and what happened to them in the New World. Therefore we would be very much interested to get in touch with the descendants of the emigrants and we would be happy to share the ancestral information with them.
So if you have a German heritage from the former Kingdom of Wuerttemberg and the names Dieter, Kuttler, Lang, Maier, Schwartzkopf, Steinhilber, Walker are part of your ancestor chart you may have a look to the following sources:
- My emigration catalog (HTML-files for all emigrants)
- List of emigrants died/related to Blackford Co., Indiana
With the name and birth date of your ancestor I should be able to match it with the data in my database. In case of a match I will be happy to provide additional information about your German roots and family relationships.
